Endometriosis is a condition where endometrial tissue, normally found in the uterus, is found elsewhere in the pelvic region, most often in the pelvic cul-de-sac behind the uterus and pelvic sidewalls, ovaries, and even over the bowel and bladder. In addition to discomfort, endometriosis can lead to chronic pelvic pain, adhesions, and even infertility.
The Center for Endometriosis is committed to excellence in the surgical management of endometriosis, and our surgeons have demonstrated experience and expertise in this type of specialized surgery. The goal of surgery is always the complete excision of all visible endometriosis - both typical and atypical. This approach has been shown to have the potential to eradicate disease and prevent progression when performed by an experienced surgeon. Thus, early excision of endometriosis is preferable and has the potential to preserve fertility.
Diagnosis and Treatment of Endometriosis
Excision surgery is performed at the the Center for Endometriosis through a minimally invasive technique called laparoscopy, which leads to less postoperative pain, faster recovery, and better cosmetic results. "See and treat" laparoscopy is performed, so that all the endometriosis is diagnosed and treated at the same procedure when possible. Since excision is used to treat any abnormal areas in the pelvis, pathologic confirmation of endometriosis is achieved.
At the Center for Endometriosis, we also employ various techniques to prevent postoperative adhesions or scarring, which can itself cause pain and negatively affect fertility.
