Welcome to the website of the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Women's Health at the Saint Louis University School of Medicine. This website introduces you to the multitude of clinical, educational and research activities in the Department.
This Department has had a long and proud tradition of commitment to excellence in medical education training of both students, residents, and MFM Fellows. The Residency Program is fully accredited by the ACGME (Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education) and the Director is D. Gregory Ward, M.D. We were re-accredited on 5/17/2012 for another 5 years. Our next site visit is in May 2017.
The Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Training Program is organized to provide the broad experience necessary for developing the essential clinical and technical skills of an obstetrician/gynecologist. We offer a unique blend of University patients, private practice patients, and public health patients. This helps foster a diversity of patient care experiences across all socio-economic frontiers. Through the partnership with SSM Health, a major national health care entity, Saint Louis University (SLU) has positioned itself for continued growth and success by promoting excellent patient care. The SLU Residency Program has a strong academic background but is based in a large vibrant community hospital. Our training program also incorporates other hospitals for maximum exposure to all available educational opportunities and faculty expertise: Saint Louis University Hospital, St. Luke's Hospital and other elective rotations. The learning environment is one that encourages the pursuit of knowledge in a caring, professional and respectful manner.
The SLU Program is hands-on, clinically oriented, resident-driven Program where residents are operating and performing Cesarean sections from the out-set of their training. The Program promotes independent decision-making with appropriate oversight. All areas of OB/GYN are represented, including a large Minimally Invasive Gynecology service that performs complex laparoscopic cases as well as Single Incision Laparoscopic Surgery (SILS). The Fetal Care Institute offers a unique approach to the management of complex fetal surgery in-utero, with referrals from across the Midwest. Our High-Risk Obstetrical Service is one of the largest in the nation and the main referral center in the Greater St. Louis area. The robust Urogynecology Division provides tremendous experience in pelvic floor disorders and vaginal surgery with case volumes that far exceed the national averages. With no fellows to complete with, our Gynecologic Oncology service is run entirely by the residents. They work one-on-one with Board Certified Gynecologic Oncologists and perform all the complex surgical cases with the attending physician. For those who desire more public health exposure, SLU provides the OB/GYN care for all of the St. Louis County Health Department. This exposes our residents to abroad ethnic and socio-economic diversity. We also have a large Generalist Division, which enables our graduates to function independently upon completion of residency.
You will find our program innovative, stimulating, and foremost, career enhancing. Thank you for your interest in our program.
