Emergency Medicine Curriculum

This conference provides an interactive forum for discussion of a follow-up case of educational value. Case discussion is focused not only on the content of the eventual diagnosis but also on the decision-making process and the eventual outcomes of patients seen in the emergency department by residents that changed their practices. Every emergency medicine resident is required to present cases in cooperation with attendings and provide evidence-based presentations on those cases.

Foundations of Emergency Medicine

Journal Club is an opportunity for the Emergency Medicine residents and faculty to come together and discuss recent articles and concepts. They take place every 3rd week of the month.  

 

Collaborative joint conferences are held in conjunction with other departments such as trauma services and internal medicine to discuss related areas of interest. 

 

Monthly sessions are held with stations in Simulation, Oral Boards, Ultrasound, and Procedures.  The simulations occur in the simulation center at the School of Medicine and focus on the core content of the month. They also provide team simulations with nursing staff and the trauma team. 

Mock oral board cases are in a virtual format to prepare residents for the ABEM Virtual Oral exam format.  
 
Ultrasound and Procedure stations provide advanced ultrasound technique training and procedural simulation and discussion. 
 

A cadaveric procedure practical anatomy workshop, at the PASE lab at Saint Louis University, is held yearly. The procedures include lateral canthotomy, cricothyrotomy, pericardiocentesis, tube thoracostomy, thoracotomy, endotracheal intubation (video, fiberoptic and direct), and central venous access. 

 

Monthly conferences by pharmacy staff cover a variety of pharmacotherapeutic topics. These conferences also try to focus on the core topic of the month.

The Saint Louis University Emergency Medicine’s Grand Rounds series is a monthly year-round conference featuring speakers from within the Saint Louis University community and external speakers. 

Various learning modules are presented in small groups to individual classes. These modules cover a wide breadth of topics that are focused to meet the learners' needs at their specific level of training.  

Saint Louis University Medical Center prides itself on the close alliance of our local emergency medical services. We hold great respect for our prehospital colleagues. During the emergency medicine residency, the resident will learn the capabilities and limitations of the prehospital system. While out in the field with the ambulance services, the resident will learn how to interact with a variety of emergency services personnel. The residents will observe the practice of emergency care in the prehospital environment. The resident will also attend regional medical advisory committees and learn emergency medical services (EMS) management and organization.
